Bodegas Muga ARO DO Rioja DO
Description: At the end of the 80's the Muga family started to think about making special elaborations having in mind the international markets. This objective involved the making of full-bodied wines, more powerful but without losing the elegance and complexity which have always been present in the wines from Muga. The result is the Aro wine, a tribute to the Rioja Wine capital. Concentrating on the fruit Aro grapes are highly selective and made from vineyards older than 60 years old with a plant by plant selection. After extensive work and care in the winery the wine is aged, lightly clarified and it is bottled without filtering. This has produced an elegant red coloured wine with violet hues which hint at a well preserved youthfulness. In the aroma there is a subtle mingling of fruit nuances of ripe red berries with hints of spices. This aroma is intense, clean and subtle. On the palate it has lots of flavour, with an elegant attack, evolving into a meaty mouth-feel. Its powerful, though modulated tannins carry the wine onwards into a long, promising finish. A complex, supple, enjoyable wine with excellent potency. (3 x 75 cl)

David Franz RED ROSE Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: Pronounced as in the flower the Red Rose this wines history started back in the late 1800's when the Stonewall vineyard was first conceived. Back then you couldn't just pop down to the local production nursery, order 50,000 vine rootlings and whack them into the ground. It wasn't even known what varieties would flourish. The best way to find out was to plant a wide variety of vines, see which did well, then propogate and plant out from these base stocks. The end result 100 or so years later is the original nursery block, full of different vines on a patch of dry ground. This mixture of vines was a difficult to pick and separate because of the hodge-podge mix of old fashioned white and premium red varieties. Finally in 2002 the penny dropped for David Franz, rather than trying to pick all the little bits and pieces separately and add them to the larger lots from the rest of the vineyards, he decided to mix the lot together and see result. As soon as all the conditions were right this old block was picked, crushed and cold macerated the must for 5 days before basket pressing, cold settling and clarifying the juice. The clears were cold fermented over three weeks to dryness, then sat on yeast lees for about a month. The resultant wine was crisp and gutsy! To bring out the voluptuous fruit flavours a small portion of clarified juice, previously frozen was added back. The only option was to bottle under Stelvin closure to ensure every ounce of vibrancy would be retained. (6 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Lan CULMEN Reserva Tinto La Rioja
Description: Tasting Notes: Intense and bright cherry colour. Noticeable ripe fruit nose, with hints of plums, bigarreau cherries and wildberries. Spicy, roasted and balsamic aromas, and memories of mineral notes. Tasty on the mouth, it is wide and complex in its ripen and sweet tannins. Good acidity and clear structure. You feel the tannins coming from the oak that become integrated and rounded along the time in the bottle. It leaves a long and lingering finish that allows us to remember all the above described and shows the great personality of this wine. Vinification: This wine is the result from a thorough grape selection in our own vineyard called Pago El Rincón. The yield in this vineyard is 3.800 Kg/ha. The grapes were picked when they reached the optimum acidity, glucometric and poliphenolic maturity from our point of view. Grapes were selected plant by plant on site. Fermentation of destalked grapes took place under controlled temperature around 32ºC in stainless steel tanks on the first few days. Then it was macerated for two weeks in order to extract a good colour from the cap of skins. Once the alcoholic fermentation was completed, another maceration in contact with the skins was carried out for three more weeks with light pumping-over to obtain sweet and elegant tannins.. The malolactic fermentation underwent in new French oak barrels. Ageing: This wine was aged in new oak barrels of 225 litre capacity during 18 months, then it entered the bottle ageing stage. (6 x 75 cl)
