It was granted by the Institute National des Appellations d'Origine in November 1997, following many years of campaigning by the vignerons of Vire and Clesse, and in particular by the Cave de Vire who control the lion's share of the appellation. The creation of Vire-Clesse appellation recognises the commitment to quality both in the vineyard and the winery, which Cave de Vire subscribe to. Yields are strictly controlled (12 x 75 cl)
