This Brachetto d’Acqui is made from Brachetto, one of italy’s most interesting grape varieties. It can be made in a variety of styles, but Contero make theirs as a slightly sparkling red. Pale cherry in colour and reminiscent of wild strawberries and crushed rose petals, this wine is a delight. The flavour is sweet and aromatic, with violets, bitter cherries and red summer fruit on the palate, and a slightly dry finish. The 11 hectare estate is owned by the Marenco family who bought it in 2004. They are, as natives of Strevi, committed to upholding the quality ethos originally established by the Lombardini family. The vineyards, in the heart of Strevi, are situated in one of the best zones for Brachetto and Moscato in Piemonte. They are superbly tended, producing fruit of stunning quality, the character of which is retained in the bottle by the Marenco family. (6 x 75 cl)

Quinta da Franqueira BRANCO Vinho Verde DOC Portugal
Description: The Franciscan monks were drawn to the site of this vineyard by the ancient spring of the 'Fonte da Vida' famous for it's healing powers since 1493. Through the ages there has been great change and the Quinta do Convento da Franqueira was built in the 1560's using stones taken from the nearby ruined castle of Faria, stronghold in the 14th century of Nuno Goncalves, a portuguese hero. More recently in 1965 it was bought by an englishman, Brian Gallie who set about with enthusiasm to restore the, by then, dilapidated building. A talented draughtsman, he left such detailed drawings that today his son Piers is continuing the work that has turned Franqueira into a haven of timeless peace and subtle beauty. Today, the six hectare vineyard and modern winery produces the refreshing vinho verde 'Quinta da Franqueira' and Piers Gallie is always pleased to show guests round and explain how the wine is made. He uses the Trajadura and Loureiro grapes to produce a light, soft floral wine showing fresh green apple. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £78.92

Terre da Vino LA LUNA e I FALO Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOC Piemonte
Description: Established in 1980, Terre da Vino is an association of vineyard owners from DOC and DOCG estates in Piedmont. With 2,500 wine growers it cultivates more than 4,000 hectares organised into 14 Wine Cooperatives, located in the classic area of production. With a new modern winery and a focus on quality production from the vineyard to the bottle this is an exciting time for Terre da Vino. The grapes come from the classic Barbera area in the comuni of Nizza Monferrato, Agliano Terme, and Clamandrana, all in the province of Asti. This wine is blended from vineyards with slightly different soils and microclimates so that the final wine will offer a better balance between structural solidity and bouquet complexity. The vineyards utilised a total of 60 hectares , and are part of the company's 'Superbarbera' project where the Terre da Vino viticulturists rigerously select vineyard that have low yields and a commitment to quality. Vinification is traditional, with a 15-20 day maceration on the skins and a 28-30oC fermentation, followed quickly by the onset of malolactic. The wine then matures for about 12 months in small oak, about 1/3 new; here, the wine, already impressively structured, acquires a multi-layered depth of flavour and character, evolving into a richly-nuanced Barbera of grace and expressiveness. This wine is a ruby-edge purple with a rich and deep bouquet showing a complex balance of violet, liquorice, and vanilla notes. The palate is crisp and dry, with a subtly-veined background of vanilla and wild berries, which carry through to its lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £93.47
