Maculan ACINOBILI Breganze Description: For three generations the Maculan family has been selecting and vinifying the best grapes in Breganze, an enchanting village, set like a small jewel at the foot of the Alps in the Veneto region. The Maculan Farm consists of 11 hectares of estate owned vineyards in the commune ofBreganze. 24 additional hectares are leased within the DOC zone ofBreganze. Maculan also works with other growers, managing production of up to 50 hectares in the DOC zone ofBreganze. The winery is located in the historic center ofBreganze and provides the link between tradition and innovative technology. Tradition taught Maculan to judiciously choose the vineyards, hand harvest only the best bunches of grapes and to develop the wines in barrique. From modern technology, Maculan have learned to harvest only into small cases, to directly press whole grapes, and to accurately control the fermentation with the aid of the most advanced information available. This blend of 85% Vespaiola, 10% Garganega and 5% Tocai Friulano it is aged 2 years in new Nevers barriques, followed by 6 months in bottle. This has produced a brilliant antique gold coloured wine. The great, intense and spicy bouquet is showing hints of acacia honey, dry fruit, raisins and flint. An elegant and sumptuous tasting wine with optimal body and massive structure it has a profound backbone with a lingering persistence. This dessert wine comes in 37.5 cl bottles and is available in limited quantities. (24 x 37.5 cl) Price: £825.80
Catherine Marshall Wines MYRIAD Pinot Noir Stellenbosch
Description: In 1996, Cathy Marshall decided to have a braai for her friends. The party turned into something of a breakthrough evening when they decided to crush some grapes that she had bought, barefooted in her garage. Nine months later the original party gathered again to bottle the wine by hand. Barefoot is now known as BMC wines, and by 1998 Cathy was handling 16 tonnes of grapes rather than the original one tonne. However, the annual harvest ritual of the 'footstomp bash' continues, but the wine is now made in the 'high tech' wineries of Amani and Yonder Hill. The company does not own vineyards, but sources the grapes from some of the best vineyards to make top quality wines. This is in the tradition of the French 'negociants' -- with a South African flavour. BMC wines are terrific to drink and the bottles provide a classic backdrop to any table with the disctinctive and stylish label, a unique collaboration with artist Hannetjie de Clercq. The Pinot and Merlot grapes were selected from a warm vineyard site located in Agter-Paarl. The Grapes were allowed to ripen to shrivel stage and a total of 1.17 tons were selectively hand picked for use in this wine. The Fruit was very concentrated as Cooler temperatures allowed for more even ripening. Tightly woven flavours of Pinot cherry, lavender and red berries mingle with ripe Merlot black plums. The Sweetness is restrained with cognac warmth lingering in the background, while the lively tensioned structure integrates with the velvety complexity throughout.. (12 x 37.5 cl) Price: £152.28
Catherine Marshall Wines BWC Pinot Noir Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Fresh mouth filling cherry and red berry fruit supported by supple, savoury and mineral oak tannins. In 1996, Cathy Marshall decided to have a braai for her friends. This wine is made from a combination of grapes from Stellenbosch, Elgin and Darling. The Bunches were in excellent condition with firm acidity and tannins, while the vine and seed phenolic ripeness was in balane with sugar ripening. Once in the winery de-stemming with no crushing resulted in whole berry component at about 80%. The mash was then cold soaked for two days at 12 degrees, then inoculated with commercial yeast. A series of punch-downs and pump-overs was undertaken during fermentation for colour and flavour extraction. The wine was then pressed and gravity fed to a combination of first, second and third fill barrels. Next the wine was matured in 225l French oak for 11 months and finally a light filtration for clarification into bottle was completed. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £76.77
