Description:
The Island is rich in winemaking history. In 1891, Captain J.S. Hamilton, the president of Pelee Island Wine Company and J.S. Hamilton & Co., began construction of a three-storey building made from stone quarried on Pelee Island. Named the Wine House, it was located on five acres near the west dock on Pelee Island. From the winepress on the third floor, juice was piped to thousand-gallon vats on the lowest level. Initially, the cellar of the Wine House contained between 15 and 18 of these vats. In 1979 the Pelee Island Winery was re-established by a group committed not just to building a world-class winery, but also to the natural heritage of the island. The century old tradition of grape growing on the island continues. Pelee Island Winery now produce around 2 dozen different wines, and are the largest VQA wine producer in Ontario. This classic Bordeaux grape gives a wine with rich berry flavours and balanced tannins, and a 'gout de terroir' finish. . (12 x 75 cl)

Azienda Agricola Sottimano CURRA Barbaresco
Description: The Sottimano family have worked hard to elevate their estate into the top echelon. Particular attention is given to the cultivation of the vineyards; in this way, through very low yields, it is possible to produce structured, full bodied wines, which can be aged for several years. Since 1990, the vines have undergone only natural treatments with no use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or weedkillers; the traditional diseases that normally afflict the vineyards are treated using eco-friendly products. During the vinification no selected yeasts are employed, and the wines are bottled without filtration or fining. The Curra vineyard is just east of Cotta (12 x 75 cl) Price: £481.06

Luna Vineyards Sangiovese Napa Valley California
Description: In 1995, two seasoned wine veterans shared a vision for a distinctive Napa Valley winery that would produce wines in the artisan fashion of the Old World Masters. George Vare and Mike Moone were major influencers in the industry when they decided to launch Luna Vineyards. Together, they selected a prime piece of property at the southernmost end of the Silverado Trail and set about to transform it into a landmark winery. President Mary Ann Tsai heads a dedicated team in crafting Napa Valley wines of intricate character and exquisite taste, using techniques such as co-fermentation and natural yeasts to achieve distinctive results. Luna has achieved critical acclaim and is quickly becoming known for producing wines whose timeless attributes evoke a lifestyle of refined taste and sophistication. 'Full medium red. Sweet, high-toned aromas of dusty cherry, sappy blackberry and leather. Supple, dense and round, with a terrific core of blackberry and spices, with the wine's oak component in the deep background. Offers excellent grip without being at all hard or rigid. At once pliant and serious, with a satisfyingly fleshy, ripe finish. In sap and texture, this struck me as rather like a merlot/cabernet franc blend.' Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £260.22

Torre Fornello DONNA LUIGIA Malvasia Colli Piacentini DOC
Description: Donna Luigia Scotti Douglas, descendant of a noble Scottish family and widow of Count Zanardi Landi, grand duke of Tuscany, bequeaths the whole estate to her daughter in 1862. The will lists the whole of the Estate with great accuracy. In her will, Donna Luigia demands that the estate should never be split up, and that is why it came down complete to the present owner, including the vineyards, while it is fascinating to notice how each parcel of land had kept its own name. In 1972 the whole of the estate was sold to the Sgorbati family, winemakers of tradition from the surrounding area. Since 1991 Enrico Sgorbati, son of Giuseppe and Fernanda, has overseen winegrowing and in 1998 he started making high-quality wines in the old manor-house, now entirely restored. The vineyards of the Torre Fornello estate cover an area of 55 hectares on the hills around Piacenza, in the commune of Ziano. Here soil and climate are particularly suitable to winegrowing, an activity that has been going on since Roman times. The vineyards are under controlled cover crop, which forces the vines to a natural competition, resulting in lower yields per hectare, but of higher quality and more resistant to moulds. While every single winemaking and stocking stage follows the guidelines regulating organic products and the result is eco-friendly, high-quality wines. Clear yellow straw coloured wine with decisive golden reflections, intense perfume and immediate hints of fuit, at first evasively and then decisively. The intense and fruty flavour are both harmonious and pleasing. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £201.07

The mouth has heady minerality with obvious toasted bread with layers of spices of cinnamon and nutmeg. The use of the French Oak is apparent in its ability to hold the wine up without overpowering the delicateness of the wine. The finish folds seamlessly into persistent fig and wet stone. Azienda Agricola Sottimano FAUSONI Barbaresco DOCG
Fausoni is a very small, south west-facing vineyard of 1ha in Neive. It is so small in fact, that Sottimano is the only house making a Fausoni at the time of writing this review. In the winery the wine undergoes maceration on the skins in steel vats with temperature control for 6-7 days, malolactic fermentation in barriques and ageing in French oak barriques for 22 months. The Barbaresco 'Fausoni,' from 40-year old vines, is the most floral of Sottimano's offerings with aromas of cassis, currant and mint, and a firm core of vibrant acidity. Brilliant ruby red colour and nuances of garnet red, moderate transparency. The nose reveals intense, clean, pleasing, refined and elegant aromas that start with hints of cherry, plum and violet followed by aromas of liquorice, menthol, tobacco, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and mace. The mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a tannic attack and pleasing crispness, however balanced by alcohol, full body, intense flavours and good tannins. The finish is persistent with flavours of plum and cherry. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £253.65
