Castello Banfi COLDISASSO Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT
Description: In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy. Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size , its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch a little over 25 years ago. At that time the Mariani Brothers were looking for an estate where the climate and soil had to be ideal for the cultivation of many of the world's noble grape varieties, and it had to be within a region of Italy that already had a tradition of quality winemaking. The 4,500 acres that the Mariani Brothers first found were near Montalcino, and eligible for the status DOCG of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most prestigious of all Italian wines and it met the other criteria as well. By good luck the adjacent estate, of 2,600 acres, became available shortly afterwards and in 1984 the 11th century castle was the final purchase, and the estate was renamed Castello Banfi. Today Castello Banfi is producing a wide range of wines including Brunello di Montalcino that was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing. ColdiSasso, which translates to 'Stony Hill' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes cultivated on the most rocky and impervious slopes of the Banfi estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. Typically harvested in early October, each grape variety is vinified separately with the Sangiovese imparting body, while stainless steel aged Cabernet Sauvignon adds fruit and structure. Intense ruby red colour this wine has fresh aromas and flavours of cassis, plum, and cherry with hints of green bell pepper. Well structured with balanced acidity the rich juicy fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon is well-balanced by the soft tannins and structure of the Sangiovese. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £65.28

Col D'Orcia BANDITELLA Rosso di Montalcino DOC
Description: The Col D’Orcia estate is one of the oldest companies of Montalcino, being present at the First Exhibition of Italian wines held in Siena in 1933 with the name Fattoria di Sant’Angelo in Colle. The origin of the estate dates back to the first half of the XVIII century when the noble family Delle Ciaia of Siena established an estate in the area of Sant’Angelo in Colle which increased year by year. In the second half of the nineteenth century the ownership was passed to the Servadio family and subsequently to the Franceschi family. In 1973 Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the company, with the aim to contribute to the development and success of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets. From 1977 the company has been under the direction of Edoardo Virano and from 1992 the Col D’Orcia estate is presided over by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano. The estate is located on the southern slope of the Montalcino territory, on hilly lands and extends over 540 hectares, from the Orcia river to the village of Sant’Angelo in Colle. The nature of the soil is undoubtedly favourable to grape growing, with fundamentally loose ground, poor in clay and rich in limestone and inert materials. Banditella is a recent vineyard where clones of Sangiovese, that have been selected over the past 10 years, provide the basis for one of the most excellent expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. After Manual harvest with rigorous selection of the bunches the grapes are immediately separated from the skin and the wine is transferred into new barriques where the malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine then refines in barriques for over one year. A dense ruby red coloured wine with youthful violet hints, it has an intense bouquet so typical of Sangiovese that is elegantly balanced by the noble spices deriving from the refinement in barrique. The fullness and elegance of the massive structure is given by a considerable quantity of noble tannins, while the aftertaste is caressed by the oak that enhances the varietal fruit. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £123.30
