Quinta do Carmo DOM MARTINHO Alentejano Portugal
Description: Owner of Chateau Lafite Rothschild for five generations, the Rothschild family has been based in this Bordeaux vineyard since 1868. High values and the respect of traditional methods make them passionate about harmony and excellence. Their wines bear witness to that passion year after year and their skills have patiently enriched the wines through the generations, with world-renowned success. Over the years, Domain Baron de Rothschild has expanded its offerings through the acquisition of several french Chateau's as well as ventures in Argentina. However, in 1992, Julio Bastos, owner of Quinta do Carmo called on Domaines Barons de Rothschild in order to renovate the property. The primary goal was to combine the traditional Alentejo winemaking techniques with the skill of the DBR teams and also unite the expression of traditional portuguese grape varieties with other new and noble varieties thus enhancing complexity and elegance. The plan has led to new plantations and the renovation of the vineyards, including systematic tying up of the vines and a limitation of yields. Major investments were also made in the Herdade das Carvalhas chais, including a new cellar, the purchase of stainless steel vats with temperature monitoring and pneumatic presses. Now integrated into Domaines Barons de Rothschild , Quinta do Carmo features a 150 hectare vineyard that is gradually reaching maturity. This renewal has done much to enhance the wines, and the first vintages under the new management reveals clearly the excellent combination of the 'Terroir' and the 'savoir faire!' This wines name comes from one of the key parcels named Dom Martinho and is Quinta do Carmo's second wine. A blend of Tempranillo, or Aragonez as it is known locally, Alicante and Periquita that make up 60% (12 x 75 cl)

High values and the respect of traditional methods make them passionate about harmony and excellence. Over the years, Domain Baron de Rothschild has expanded its offerings through the acquisition of several french Chateau's as well as ventures in Portugal. However, in 1998 the Caro Project, based in Mendoza, Argentina was started. The idea was raised about forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild and the Catena family. Initial enthusiasm was rapidly transformed into a project to produce a single wine combining French and Argentinean cultures. Caro has a strong Argentinian identity, heralded by Malbec, while obtaining further elegance and complexity through blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 14 months, including 60% in new barrels this blend is a rich and refined wine with a harmonious balance between the Argentinian and Bordeaux styles. (12 x 75 cl)

Initial enthusiasm was rapidly transformed into a project to produce a single wine combining French and Argentinean cultures. Amancaya, like its sister wine Caro, has been the latest development and presents a harmonious balance between the Argentinean and Bordeaux styles. A more fruity style wine coming from the higher percentage of Malbec has produced an intense purple-red colour with aromas of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, underpinned by notes of smoky vanilla from the oak. On the palate it has good concentration but is both fresh and full. Balanced and very attractive with tannins of great quality this is a wine to enjoy to the long finish. The word Amancaya is the native indian name of a flower of the Andes that you can find in the Mendoza area. (12 x 75 cl)

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec and it is aged 11 months in French oak of which 20% are new barrels. A foward fruity style coming from the higher percentage of Malbec demonstrates both the new and old world heritage at the core of this wines roots. A lovely dark red coloured wine it is showing a fruity nose primarily of red fruit with vanilla as well as spice notes. Nice concentration, this wine is fleshy while the wood is well blended with the fruit, the gentle tannins and nice length complement each other. (12 x 75 cl)
