Gallo Family Vineyards FREIRANCH Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley California Description: Our FreiRanch Vineyard Zinfandel is an elegant and well-balanced wine. It showcases characters of black pepper spice, plum, and ripe berry, matched with sweet vanilla and toast from the oak barrels. The grape clusters were de-stemmed, but not crushed, to retain the grape's varietal essence The grapes were then sent to vertical fermenters, where temperatures were kept between 88 and 92 F, with cap circulations occurring regularly for gentle, yet maximum, extraction of flavor and body from the grape skins. Once dry, the wine was transferred to oak barrels for an average of 13 months, during which the wine completed Malolactic Fermentation. The wine's rich character was accentuated by the use of American, French and European oak barrels. The barrels were racked every four to six months in the aging cycle to clarify the wine naturally and to assist in the aging process. The wine was not fined and only minimally filtered prior to bottling to retain the natural essence of the grapes. Zinfandel grapes for this wine were harvested from select sites on the FreiRanch Vineyard. Grapes were picked during the month of September at 24.8 to 25.2º brix. The Gallo of Sonoma FreiRanch Vineyard, first planted by Charles Dunz and Andrew Frei in the late 1800's, is located in the cooler benchlands of Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley. In this hillside location, soils are a combination of gravel, clay and loam. Its unique combination of climate and hillside Manzanita and Suther series soils yields Zinfandel grapes which make full-bodied, complex wines with aromas and flavors of plum, ripe berry and black pepper spice. Gallo Family Vineyards FREIRANCH Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek Valley California Description: Our FreiRanch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, mint, and cassis. The layers of fruit are balanced delightfully with spice and toasty oak. The grape clusters were destemmed but not crushed, to increase the percentage of whole berries sent to vertical and rotary fermenters. This allows us to better retain the grape's varietal essence and reduce the potential for bitter tannin extraction in the wine. Fermentation temperatures were kept between 85 and 88 F, with cap circulation occurring regularly for gentle, yet maximum, extraction of flavor and body from the grape skins. After fermentation, the wine was transferred to European, American, and French oak barrels for 24 months of aging. The barrels were racked every three to four months in the aging cycle to clarify the wine naturally and to assist in the aging process. This wine completed malolactic fermentation and it was minimally filtered prior to bottling to enhance bouquet, flavor, and body. The grapes for this wine were predominately estate grown on our FreiRanch Vineyard. To intensify varietal character, shoot and leaf removal and cluster thinning were employed in the vineyard. Gallo Family Vineyards LAGUNA RANCH Chardonnay RussianRiver Valley California Description: Our Laguna Vineyard Chardonnay displays the intense peach, pear, apple and melon of a great cool-climate Chardonnay. Accentuated by the creaminess from sur-lie aging along with the sweet vanilla and toastiness from the oak barrels, this wine is deliciously complex with a long, lingering finish. Grapes for this wine were handpicked and sent whole cluster to a membrane press, bypassing the crusher to reduce the potential for bitter tannin extraction. A press cut was taken at approx. 140 gallons/ton to increase elegance and eliminate phenolic harshness.Grapes were gently pressed in whole clusters to increase elegance and minimize phenolics. Our family's Laguna Ranch Vineyard, originally planted in the late 1800's, is located in the Region I hillsides of the RussianRiver Valley. Soils here are a combination of gravelly and sandy loam, referred to as Sebastopol series. The fog that lingers here throughout the day makes this one of our coolest Sonoma County vineyards, and produces Chardonnay grapes with crisp acidity and concentrated citrus, apple, and pear flavors and aromas. With three generations and over six decades of experience in northern Sonoma, our family believes that the secret to making world class wines is to begin with world class grapes. This is why we vigorously shoot-thinned and leaf-removed vines to intensify varietal character for this wine. Hand harvesting of the specially selected vineyard blocks for this wine occurred in late 2000. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £89.40
