GalloFamily Vineyards FREIRANCHZinfandel Dry Creek Valley California
Description: Our FreiRanch Vineyard Zinfandel is an elegant and well-balanced wine. It showcases characters of black pepper spice, plum, and ripe berry, matched with sweet vanilla and toast from the oak barrels. The grape clusters were de-stemmed, but not crushed, to retain the grape's varietal essence The grapes were then sent to vertical fermenters, where temperatures were kept between 88 and 92 F, with cap circulations occurring regularly for gentle, yet maximum, extraction of flavor and body from the grape skins. Once dry, the wine was transferred to oak barrels for an average of 13 months, during which the wine completed Malolactic Fermentation. The wine's rich character was accentuated by the use of American, French and European oak barrels. The barrels were racked every four to six months in the aging cycle to clarify the wine naturally and to assist in the aging process. The wine was not fined and only minimally filtered prior to bottling to retain the natural essence of the grapes. Zinfandel grapes for this wine were harvested from select sites on the FreiRanch Vineyard. Grapes were picked during the month of September at 24.8 to 25.2º brix. The Gallo of Sonoma FreiRanch Vineyard, first planted by Charles Dunz and Andrew Frei in the late 1800's, is located in the cooler benchlands of Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley. In this hillside location, soils are a combination of gravel, clay and loam. Its unique combination of climate and hillside Manzanita and Suther series soils yields Zinfandel grapes which make full-bodied, complex wines with aromas and flavors of plum, ripe berry and black pepper spice. GalloFamily Vineyards FREIRANCH Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek Valley California
Description: Our FreiRanch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, mint, and cassis. The layers of fruit are balanced delightfully with spice and toasty oak. The grape clusters were destemmed but not crushed, to increase the percentage of whole berries sent to vertical and rotary fermenters. This allows us to better retain the grape's varietal essence and reduce the potential for bitter tannin extraction in the wine. Fermentation temperatures were kept between 85 and 88 F, with cap circulation occurring regularly for gentle, yet maximum, extraction of flavor and body from the grape skins. After fermentation, the wine was transferred to European, American, and French oak barrels for 24 months of aging. The barrels were racked every three to four months in the aging cycle to clarify the wine naturally and to assist in the aging process. This wine completed malolactic fermentation and it was minimally filtered prior to bottling to enhance bouquet, flavor, and body. The grapes for this wine were predominately estate grown on our FreiRanch Vineyard. To intensify varietal character, shoot and leaf removal and cluster thinning were employed in the vineyard. GalloFamily Vineyards SONOMA COUNTY Zinfandel California
Description: Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallofamily for almost 70 years and in developing the Ernest & Julio Gallo Sonoma wines, the winemakers have made a careful journey from vine to wine. The journey begins in Sonoma County where cool ocean breezes, lingering coastal fog and the warm sun nurture the ripening grapes. It ends with patient barrel-by-barrel tasting during fermentation and ageing to ensure that the potential tasted on the vine is captured in the bottle. Great wine is made in the vineyard and much of Sonoma's success is rooted in a consistent pattern of warm days and cool nights during the summer months. Such climate makes for a long growing season with plenty of hang-time for the grapes, producing full-bodied vintages as well as being rich in concentrated flavours of ripe plum, dark berry and spice. Upon their arrival at the winery, the grapes were de-stemmed but not crushed, resulting in 20-30% whole berries. Next, they were cold soaked with the skins for 24 hours, a technique that helps stabilize and capture delicate flavour nuances. Primary fermentation was accomplished in mostly upright, stainless steel tanks and lasted no more than 5 days at temperatures ranging from 88-92 F. The wine was then barrel aged for an average of 5 months in new and seasoned oak to enhance complexity and smoothness. Very much a Sonoma Zinfandel, displaying all of the characteristic power and grace for which the county has become famous. Exciting aromas of dark plum and cherry richly foreshadow an even deeper palate of berry pie, black fruit jam and spice. Barrel ageing has not only given this vintage well-balanced structure; it has added warm notes of coconut and vanilla to the finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £71.03
