D'Arenberg THE HERMIT CRAB Marsanne Viognier McLaren Vale Australia
Description: Well-balanced, restrained blend of these two perfumed varieties with honeyed apricot fruit on the palate and a lovely steely citrus character, it is a worthy gold medal winner but sadly in short supply. The Hermit Crab McLaren Vale Viognier Marsanne has a green, brilliant mid-straw colour and exhibits fresh and tropical fruit with a strong emphasis on stone fruits, pineapple, mango and honeysuckle. The youthful palate is immediately luscious with those tropical fruit, honeysuckle and stone fruit flavours balanced by fresh grapefruit and light butter tastes, before a long persistent fruit finish. Why the name Hermit Crab? Many of McLaren Vale's vineyards are on free- draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local fauna which lived in the shallow seas which once covered what is now McLaren Vale. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little critter, which still inhabits the cast off shells of other crustaceans on our coastlines. The Osborn family and Chester in particular thought this was exactly the right name for this first ever blend of these two varieties from McLaren Vale. This is because the Hermit Crab is best enjoyed with shell food and seafood dishes, and the fact that 'Hermit' is the abbreviation of the name of the region in France where the Marsanne grape predominates. Louis Latour Santenay Rouge AC
Description: Unusually for the Cote d'Or the system of pruning employed by the growers of Santenay is the Cordon Royat rather than the simple Guyot. The producers argue that the increased richness of the soil in their vineyards needs to be compensated for by not overly burdening the vines by keeping them young and vigorously pruned. They produce admirable, lively wines, with a very abundant and special bouquet reminiscent of strawberry and cherry. Soil: Rich marl and limestone. Vinification: Traditional open vat fermentation with 18 months ageing in oak barrels. (12 x 75 cl)

Goyenechea QUINTA GENERACION Malbec Argentina
Description: The Malbec is considered as a variety especially well suited to Argentina and the grape used in Goyenechea's wine, comes from different established vine growers close to the Atuel River, in the state of San Rafael. The vineyard is comprised of vertical-trained wines with double Guyot pruning. The fermentation, although classic, was carried out by ''delestage'' system, macerating the cold unfermented grape juice with the solid parts of the grape for six days at high temperature. The malolactic fermentation took place afterwards. The finished wine was matured in tanks, for eighteen months, without any wood ageing. This Argentine Malbec is a plum red colour, with very high structure, good body, characteristic complexity and nice long finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Chateau de Garraud Lalande de Pomerol
Description: The yields are limited by Double Guyot pruning with bud removal, manual leaf removal and crop thinning when necessary. The grapes, 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, are harvested by hand at full maturity and gone over by hand on a vibrating sorting table. The vinification is done in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with 2-3 week maceration. The maturing is conducted in the traditional manner for about 18 months, 80% in oak barrels, a third of which is renewed every year, and 20% in vats. Château Garraud possesses great elegance and a red color that evolve into a Purple-garnet with raspberry highlights. It releases a bouquet of redcurrants and vanilla, while the oakiness is still present. Velvety texture, great length and a long finish. Available in Magnums.
Chateau L'Ancien Lalande de Pomerol
Description: Made from Merlot using the traditional cultural methods, the yield has been limited to produce grapes of the most consistent quality. Vines are pruned using the Double Guyot system with bud removal, and the crop is thinned when necessary. After a long maceration, Château l'Ancien is matured in new oak barrels for more than 18 months in an underground, air-conditioned cellar. A severe selection is made during each phase of the wine making, from the culture of the vine to the vinification and maturing with only the best kept. Château l'Ancien is distinguished by a great structure and intense, deep red color. Fine, oaky nose, which is elegant, smooth and harmonious. The firm palate is full with a superb long finish. The wine is bottled at the Château and can be enjoyed for many years and is packaged in a wooden case.
