Depending on the vintage, a portion of Sangiovese is kept in stainless steel, a portion into newer oak barrels, and the majority is matured in older oak. These components are blended together prior to bottling. The resultant wine is lighter to medium bodied, frequently showing rich fruit flavours of dark cherry and spice balanced by crisp acidity. It is an ideal accompaniment to many types of food including rich Italian pasta and mild Thai dishes. Careful cellaring for 3-5 years will allow this wine to develop extra complexity. Coriole Estate was established by the Lloyd family in 1967 in the hills overlooking the McLaren Vale wine region and Gulf St Vincent. Coriole remains today as a small family owned company specialising in Shiraz, but which has also been at the forefront of producing Sangiovese in Australia. The estate is run by Mark Lloyd and his brother Paul. The winemaker since 1999 is Grant Harrison ex Petaluma and Primo Estate. The average age of the vineyards is 30-35 years old with the oldest block planted in 1919. The Mary Kathleen 1998 obtained a Parker 94 rating (12 x 75 cl)

The original vineyard at Coriole, planted in 1920, is situated in the hills north of the McLaren Vale township, in an area known as the 'Seaview' sub region. There are 33 Ha of vines and many of these were planted around 1970 when the fashion was to plant in contours around the hills. From the top of these hills it is possible to see the whole McLaren Wine Region, the old Willunga Range and the sea. The fruit for this Reserve wine is sourced from several small 20 (6 x 75 cl)
