With a strong heritage and long family history in grape-growing and winemaking Richard and Jette Hamilton established the family business in 1972. In that year they built a small winery in McLaren Vale and with grapes from his own and his father's vineyards, produced the first of the Richard Hamilton wines. Wine quality starts in the vineyard and this has been the driving force behind vineyard developments by Dr Richard Hamilton and his family over five generations. The result is a collection of vineyards that represent some of the best old vine material in the country, the oldest dating back to 1892.

Richard Hamilton LOT 148 Merlot McLaren Vale South Australia
Description: A Mclaren Vale Merlot showing a deep red colour with some youthful crimson. The rich fruit-cake nose with a hint of spicy mint has benefitted from time in oak to highlight aromatic cinnamon, vanilla and spice to the wine. Very round and long palate with excellent mouth-feel and persistence this is a well made wine. Fine tannins enhance the weight while a clean acidity ensures the wine finishes cleanly. Hamilton is one of the original Australian winemaking families. In 1837 Richard Hamilton founded the Hamilton Vineyards, just south of Adelaide in 1837. It was planted with stock brought by the family from South Africa, en route from England. Five winemaking generations later, in 1972, Richard's great-great-grandson Dr Richard Hamilton established a small winery in McLaren Vale under the guidance of his father Burton, a noted viticulturist, and uncle, renowned vigneron, Sydney Hamilton.S ydney retired in 1981 after 65 vintages and Dr Richard Hamilton purchased the company from him. Chateau Richard Coup de Coeur Saussignac
Description: Organic. This scintillatingly brilliant, top dessert wine from the Richard estate has been linked to a hypothetical mix of Chateau Climens and Chateau d'Yquem! Justified praise, as this is one of the finest dessert wines you will try. Aged in new oak for fifteen months, it is rich and intense with fantastic honey and nut sweetness, balanced by a wonderful, crisp, clean cutting acidity. This will convert anyone who thinks they don't like sweet wine! "Great combo of the nerviness of botrytis, the luxury of new oak and the ripeness of pears in honey". Jancis Robinson, Financial Times.
