Ca' dei Frati RONCHEDONE Lugana Veneto
Description: Marzemino and Sangiovese are the main grapes for the 2005 Ronchedone, together with a maximum of 10% of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a good depth of colour and perfumes of spicy red fruits on the nose. On the palate it has excellent concentration of spicy, jammy fruit with rounded, soft tannins and good acidity. Good structure supporting the ripe fruit character gives it a nice balance and attractive weight. Over the past decade, the Dal Cero family has transformed their Ca’ dei Frati property into a model Italian estate. When we first began buying their wines in 1987, they had 12 hectares of vineyard; today, they have 50. This increase in quantity has been matched by an increase in quality, and today they remain the best producers in Lugana. The quality of their vineyards is the secret of their success. Many producers in the zone overcrop and train the vines high. At Ca’ dei Frati, the vines are trained low, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and yields are well below the average for the zone. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £94.69

Ca' dei Frati Lugana Veneto
Description: Made solely from the Lugana grape, this Lugana has a fresh, fragrant nose of white flowers, apricots and almonds, which gives way to ripe, round fruit on the palate and a clean, zingy acidity that cuts through on the finish. Unoaked to maintain its purity of fruit, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to add body and richness, followed by 6 months on its lees in stainlesssteel tank. A superb vintage in Lugana. A perfect autumn of warm days and cool nights ensured that they grapes ripened well and retained their aromas. Yields were down, a factor that has resulted in great intensity on the mid palate and, unfortunately, an increase in price. Ca’ dei Frati remains the best producer in Lugana. The secret to their success is simple: outstanding vineyards. Vines are trained low, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and yields are well below the average for the zone. The quality of the fruit is accentuated in the modern winery, where Igino Dal Cero is not afraid to losestraightforward, primary perfumes if he gains weight, texture and complexity on the palate by allowing some of the vats to go through malolactic fermentation. This distinguishes theirs from many other Italian whites, and results in a wine with the sort of fullness and length that would, if produced in Friuli, fetch twice the price it currently does. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £131.10

Tommasi Viticoltori LE FORNACI Lugana DOC
Description: Tommasi Viticoltori is a family firm founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi and today the estate is run by the 4th generation of family. From grandfather Giacomo's tiny vineyard, the Tommasi estate has grown steadily and now extends over 135 hectares of hillside vineyard blessed by mother nature, not only by a magnificent landscape, but more importantly by its perfect suitability for grapes. The family owns exceptionally well situated estates for the production of high quality white wine in the D.O.C. regions of Soave and near Lake Garda for Lugana, Custoza and Bardolino . In addition, it has vineyards in Valdadige, a valley created by the Adige river in the mountains north of the province of Verona. After years of searching for a truly memorable cru in the Lugana zone, Tommasi discovered the vineyard 'Le Fornaci'. It is cultivated in soil deposited by the glacier which carved out Lake Garda and characteristically yields only a small volume of the most prestious Trebbiano di Lugana grapes. After careful selection of the Trebbiano di Lugana grapes they spend 7 days fermenting in stainlesssteel tanks followed by 5 months maturation in stainlesssteel tanks. This has produced a moon yellow coloured wine with a clean and spicy fragrance, highlighted by delicious hints of tropical fruit. Medium-bodied with good acidity it has a clean, crisp finish. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £128.04

Montresor OTTELLA Lugana Description: Il bianco de l'Otela, as the old inhabitants of Northern Italy's Peschiera sometimes called it, is none other than the Trebbiano di Lugana of the Montresor family, winegrowers for many generations, and the tradition continues. Franscesco left the legal profession and, with his father Ludovico, has dedicated all of his time to the pursuit of the highest quality wines. The Ottella Lugana, thanks to the care dedicated to the vineyard, to the harvest , and to the wonderful nature of the soil, which is born of great distinction. The Montresor family vinifies all the grapes from their own 25 hectares of vineyards and those of longtime growers, in order to guarantee that the highest quality wine possible is derived from the terreno. In this unexpectedly benign climate the much-maligned variety Trebbiano can flourish, especially if it is grown with care and not permitted to over-produce. Here is a beautiful example of the result: a very aromatic bouquet introduces mild, somewhat broad flavors to the palate. The wine is quite dry, but not particularly hard edged, and in a forthright and attractive way makes its case for its grape and soil, and its producer, who must be complemented for coaxing such balance into being. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £84.09
