Stellar Winery FAIRTRADE Organic Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc RSA
Description: The two components of this wine were aged separately on their lees before being blended together and given a short time with French Oak. The result is a pale coloured wine with a tint of yellow. Showing a hint of tinned peaches with light oak on the nose and aftertaste, this is a lightly structured, well-balanced, smooth tasting wine. Stellar Winery is situated 275 km north of Cape Town on the road to Namibia. The winery makes use of a semi-arid climate, unrivalled refrigeration capacity and extensive in-house engineering skills to produce modern, Fairtrade organicwines. Stellar Winery was the first organic vineyard and cellar operation to receive the highly sought after Fairtrade accreditation. Fairtrade companies undertake to empower economically disadvantaged workers and ensure that a fair price is paid for the product along the whole supply chain. Stellar Winery undertakes a big commitment with both farm and cellar staff transported to and from work, while families receive health care and the permanent services of a community worker. Workers receive free housing, electricity and water as well as subsidised schooling and child-care facilities. Finally, a percentage of the wholesale price of the wine is paid directly back to the Stellar Fairtrade Workers' Trust. The wine is made in the sparsely populated Namaqualand region and does not suffer the light pollution that plagues urban areas around the world. The dark nights and clean air result in a breathtaking cosmic display with the aptly-named Milky Way at its centre and the producer pays homage to this phenomenon with the Stellar Range. The wines are assembled from different farms, ferments and yeasts. Each wine in the blend starts with deep colour and ripe fruit and tannins. Individual nuances arise from organic agriculture, saline irrigation water, cooling afternoon winds, wild ferments and other still-to-be-discovered influences. Lightly wooded for structure rather than flavour, these wines offer a tasting experience that will provide a convincing argument for the ascendancy of organic over conventional wines. Catherine Marshall Wines BWC Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Lively, vivid lime zest expression with a full ripe mid-palate of passion fruit, mango and a long citrus length. In 1996, Cathy Marshall decided to have a braai for her friends. The party turned into something of a breakthrough evening when they decided to crush some grapes that she had bought, barefooted in her garage. Nine months later the original party gathered again to bottle the wine by hand. Barefoot is now known as BMC wines, and by 1998 Cathy was handling 16 tonnes of grapes rather than the original one tonne. However, the annual harvest ritual of the 'footstomp bash' continues, but the wine is now made in the 'high tech' wineries of Amani and Yonder Hill. The company does not own vineyards, but sources the grapes from some of the best vineyards to make top quality wines. This is in the tradition of the French 'negociants' -- with a South African flavour. BMC wines are terrific to drink and the bottles provide a classic backdrop to any table with the disctinctive and stylish label, a unique collaboration with artist Hannetjie de Clercq. The Grapes originate from organically managed vineyard and the harvest provided a nice spectrum of flavours, although the bunches were small they were very juicy. After pressing and fermentation the wine enjoyed contact on the lees for four months after which a light filtration was done at bottling. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £53.93

Andrea Oberto GIADA Barbera d'Alba DOC
Description: Very deep colour. A massive brooding, rich nose with fine new oak character. The palate shows great ripeness and depth with a long, warm oaky finish. Superb. Andrea Oberto owns 8 hectares of perfectly exposed vineyards in the commune of La Morra . He uses organic farming methods with very hard pruning in winter and bunch thinning in the summer to reduce yields to no more than 5 or 6 bunches per vine in good vintages and 3 or 4 bunches in less good years. This equals just over 1 bottle of wine per plant in a good vintage. Oberto’s adoption of avant garde winemaking techniques and maturation exclusively in French oak means that all his wines have great elegance, suppleness and precision of fruit flavours. Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron LES FLEURIERES Nuits-Saint-Georges
Description: Alain Meunier and his wife, Sophie own this 7 hectare vineyard estate based at Premaux-Prissey, south of Nuits, additionally they have vineyard holdings in many parts of the Cotes de Nuits. The grapes are grown organically and, to maximise the fruit, all the grapes are de-stemmed before vinification. The grand crus are aged in 100% new French oak, and the premier crus in 80%. Dominio del Bendito GOLD Tinto de Toro Zamora
Description: Having spent 12 months in French oak, and the fruit having had a longer maceration on the skins, the 'Gold' is a huge, complex wine with exceptional structure and balance. Antony Terryn is one of those wine makers whose unbridled passion for his soil, vines and winemaking allows him to transcend the limitations set by those around him. Having made wine in some of the worlds most prestigious arenas, including his native France, Antony settled on a patch of old vine Tinta de Toro near the town of Toro in North West Spain. Being an area renowned for low cost bulk wine that fuelled the inhabitants of Madrid, what Toro isnt known for are the small patches of exceptional terroir that are to be found with a little hard work, but which largely seemed to have gone unnoticed. It is from this small patch of 8 hectares that Antony produces a small amount of each of his wines with the loving care and attention to detail that is so apparent once tasted. The low yields, hand harvesting and organic viticulture along with exacting fruit selection and meticulous wine making produce simply stunning wines. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £118.68

Montes ALPHA 'M' Colchagua Valley Chile
Description: The slopes of Apalta in Colchagua enclose a half-moon shaped area with a unique micro-climate, defined by the mountains and one of Chile's widest rivers, the Tinguiririca. The best slopes in this valley, with a 15% average inclination, are found on our property where we grow the grapes for Montes Alpha "M". Having a west-south-west exposure allows for exactly the right number of hours of sunlight and provides us with an ocean breeze . The very warm days but cool winds at night, with their lowering temperatures, give a micro-climate particularly suited for growing red grape varieties. Add to this, the poor soils with little organic matter, drip irrigation, and the high density of vines make growing conditions just right. Montes Alpha "M" is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Cabernet Franc which enhances the elegance of the first variety, and is in total harmony with the softness of the second and austerity of the third. The wine is an intense multi-hued ruby red with an aroma redolent of berries. The red fruit with notes of black pepper and spices blends harmoniously when aged one year in French oak barriques that contribute subtle vanilla tones. On the palate, it is perfectly balanced, full-bodied and superbly voluptuous on the mid-palate with a rewarding, lingering aftertaste of mature grapes and acidity that reflects its superb structure. Although young, Montes Alpha "M" can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years . We recommend serving this wine with lamb chops, roast lamb, lamb casserole, steak and kidney in all its forms, roast goose or roast turkey, also beef Bourguignonne, roast venison, rabbit, boar. If you are a vegetarian, it will go extremely well with vegetable lasagne. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £222.25
