Simonsig Chardonnay Stellenbosch RSA
Description: 8 months in French Oak barriques. 40% new oak. 25% Malolactic fermentation. Simonsig Chardonnay was one of the first Chardonnays produced in South Africa. This year the 1997 won a Gold Medal at the London International Wine Challenge and the 1998 a Bronze Medal at the Chardonnay du Monde in France. At a recent tasting of the Wine of the Month Club the 1998 came in the Top 6 out of the 71 Chardonnays tasted. This is very encouraging as the 1998 is still young and still developing. www.simonsig.co.za (12 x 75 cl)

Description: Simonsig Chenin Blanc is one of the original three wines released by Frans Malan in 1968. Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Simonsig has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon since 1976 and achieved early success when the 1997 vintage won the General Smuts Trophy after being judged as the Champion Wine of South Africa. Since these days we planted a lot more Cabernet especially on deep decomposed granite and shale soils that are well known for bearing low yield, high quality grapes. A deep purple red colour with brick edges. The intense nose of red berries, blackcurrant and carnations, enhanced by subtle wood flavours gives the wine great complexity. Soft tannins and a long aftertaste emphasise the potential of this vintage. www.simonsig.co.za (6 x 75 cl)

Simonsig Shiraz Stellenbosch RSA
Description: 17 months in small oak and about 35% in big wood. Small oak, mostly French with 11% American oak. Very light egg white fining before bottling. The oldest Shiraz vineyards on the Estate were planted in 1973 and the yields are sometimes as low as 4 tons per hectare. In 1993 a new planting program was started for Shiraz and only the best available clones were planted. These clones are all virus free and come from South Africa, France and Argentina. The new clones ripen earlier with high sugar levels and an abundance of colour. The yields are also higher and a green harvest was done just prior to veraison. Garnet red colour. The nose shows pepper and fynbos or dried protea flavours with toasty vanilla oak sweetness. Spicy complexity with lively fruit lies gently on the palate and a soft tannin structure rounds of this medium bodied Shiraz. Silver award at the 1999 Veritas Awards. www.simonsig.co.za (12 x 75 cl)

Simonsig Pinotage Stellenbosch RSA
Description: It was a fairly dry winter with 529mm of rain which is about 20% below average. The growing season started early and we expected a very early harvest. This was exacerbated by very hot conditions during harvest which resulted in high sugars. Due to these hot conditions we harvested very healthy grapes as there were no problems with viticultural diseases during the growing period. The size of the crop was about 10% below average and the average yield was 8.5 ton/ha. Exceptionally ripe grapes were picked and the wines all show very dark colours, succulent fruit and soft ripe tannins. This Pinotage has a deep dark purple colour. Typical for this warm vintage, the deep plummy fruit is well supported by concentrated raspberries and banana flavours. Soft tannins combined with a well balanced acidity makes this wine accessible at a young age but will also ensure a long maturation potential. Silver Award at the 1999 Veritas Awards. www.simonsig.co.za (12 x 75 cl)

Simonsig FRANS MALAN RESERVE Stellenbosch RSA
Description: An average rainfall of 692mm saturated the soil during winter and bud burst was 2 weeks later than normal. Moist conditions during spring caused higher incidence of fungus diseases. Strong Black South-Easter in November caused poor berry set in some areas of Stellenbosch and this caused crop losses. Low night temperatures prevailed in January and February and this gave us good natural acidity. Rain during March threatened to spoil the Cabernet but a rigorous selection and a yield of approximately 8 tons/ha ensure the high quality of this wine. A deep ruby red colour. The typical strawberry flavours of the Pinotage combine with the intense carnation flavours of the Cabernet, without one dominating the other. A maturation period of 12 months in oak gives this wine a smooth mouth feel and the drier tannins of the Cabernet gives it a long lasting finish. www.simonsig.co.za (6 x 75 cl)
