Penfolds MAGILL ESTATE Shiraz AdelaideHills Australia Description: From the historic Magill Estate Vineyard, located in the Adelaide foothills of SouthAustralia,Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz has established itself as one of Australia's most important single-vineyard wines. It was created by former Chief Winemaker Don Ditter in 1983, and is the only wine still produced at the original Penfolds estate. The vineyard was the first established by Penfolds founder Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844. The vineyard is now 5.2 hectares in size, planted solely with Shiraz vines planted between 1951 and 1985. They are hand-pruned and harvested. The wine is matured in new French and American oak barrels for 14 months, and bottled with minimal interference from filtration or fining. Colour: Concentrated, deep, plum red. Nose: Lifted, floral aromas combine with dark chocolate and cinnamon, and citrus peel spices. Exotic, yet savoury overtones. Palate: Distinctive, spicy, dark berry compote typical of the region. Penfolds KOONUNGA HILL Chardonnay SouthAustralia Description: Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay is sourced from multiple Australian wine districts including significant contributions from the Barossa Valley and AdelaideHills. It is a full-flavoured style with distinctive primary fruit characters, sustained intensity and a subtle underlay of moderate oak. Matured in a combination of small French oak barriques for three months, and stainless tanks for five months. All wine was left on lees. Pale straw coloured wine with a lemon green hue, it has lemon curd and lavender aromas that harmoniously integrate with oak hints of malt and nutmeg. A full-bodied wine showing stone fruit and melon integrated with subtle oak. The creamy mid palate is balanced with zesty lemon rind acidity, ensuring a clean fresh finish. Available in half bottles. Founder and former racing car driver turned wine producer, Alan Heath, purchased from his retiring next door neighbour a 100 year old dairy farm in the premium wine growing region the 'AdelaideHills' in SouthAustralia. Paying great attention to soil type, climate, row sizes, ripping, water quality, varieties and cloning attracted the immediate attention of Penfolds who contracted the fruit from his premium vineyard for a number of years. The purchase of the Vineyard was the start of a journey that culminated with the formation of Heath Wines in 1998. Alan's days as a grower taught him some valuable lessons. Sourcing of fruit is driven by the 'best sub-region for each varietal' and the 'best vineyard for each sub-region.'
