Tasting Note A lively mixture of black currants, cherries and spice on the nose. Juicy, ripe tannins and fresh acidity frame the fruit on the palate with the oak adding some richer, seductive chocolate notes in the finish. 13.5% Spy Valley Pinot Noir is unquestionably one of the best pound for pound wines in New Zealand. Whilst many wineries have jumped on the Pinot Noir bandwagon by pricing their wines in line with Premier Cru Burgundies, Spy Valley have just concentrated on making amazing wine at a realistic price. A bit about Spy Valley Named after the satellite listening post located over the road from the winery, Spy Valley is in the Waihopai Valley in Marlborough. Happily for us they appear more interested in fine wine than exploding cigars, and recent vintages have seen the winery’s trophy cabinet filled to bursting. Like most Marlborough wineries, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are Spy Valley specialties but winemaker Ant Mackenzie and his team also make a great range of aromatic whites including Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Their quality was recognised in March 2007 when the winery became the first ever producer to win four trophies in the same year at the Sydney Wine Show. (6 x 75 cl)

Horse Mountain QUAGGA RIDGE White Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The wine is made from a menage of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon as well as Chenin and has a crisp, almost grassy tropical freshness produced from excellent white noble grape varieties blended to harmonious perfection.
