Jackson Wine Estates ATALON MOUNTAIN ESTATES Merlot Napa Valley California
Description: Thomas Peffer Atalon Winemaker considered: 'The Mountain Estates Merlot captures the bold expression of fruit farmed on mountain vineyard sites. The mountain mesoclimate, created by higher altitude, steep terrain and rocky soils, restricts vine growth and naturally limits vigor. As a result the vines yield fewer berry clusters which are smaller in size with thick skins and boast saturated, intense flavours. 'This a serious Merlot that offers extreme drinking pleasure. It exhibits aromas of black fruit with mineral and smoky cedar spice notes. Rich and intense, the wine is framed by sturdy yet balanced tannins, lush viscosity and flavours of chocolate, black fruit and cherries with a hint of ripe plum in the background.' Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. From the 1970's the Cabernet Sauvignon vines surrounding the winery helped to establish the reputation of several boutique Napa wineries, including Liparita, Duckhorn and La Jota. In 1996 the famed Howell Mountain property was renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic ghost winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley frontier. In 1997, Atalon was created to revive the vineyard's past accomplishments and to build on the area's reputation for producing remarkable redwines. Although inspired by ghosts long gone, Atalon wines reflect a modern understanding of farming Napa's rugged mountains and valleys for the most balanced and expressive wines. To integrate the diverse flavors found throughout the Napa Valley, the wines take us beyond the ridges of Howell Mountain into the broader domain of neighboring appellations. Atalon wines are a comprehensive exploration of the Napa Valley appellation. Drawing fruit from selected vineyards, the wines are a composite of vineyards stretching from the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros in the south to the peaks of Howell Mountain in the north. Atalon is dedicated to the true essence and flavor of the Napa Valley, a distinction defined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vineyards are chosen for proven quality from the best known districts known to grow high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, including Oakville, Rutherford, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Napa Carneros and Howell Mountain. Atalon produces two tiers of wine: a Napa Valley designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a Mountain Estate designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Napa Valley wines are packed with ripe, opulent fruit, gentle tannins and rich textures long associated with the Napa Valley. The Mountain Estate wines are focused expressions of mountain fruit (12 x 75 cl) Price: £266.50

Jackson Wine Estates ATALON Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California
Description: Thomas Peffer Atalon Winemaker considered: 'This wine is expressive of what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can be at its best. A juicy core of fruit floods the mouth, laden with ripe cherries, dark plums, peppery herbs and blackberry. Blending from select vineyard blocks in the valley’s middle corridor offers a pleasing blend of supple tannins from Oakville and Rutherford. Darker fruit flavours, richness and bigger, chalkier tannins are from our sites in the Howell Mountain and Stagecoach vineyards along the Vaca mountain range. French oak adds delicate spice and vanilla.' Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. Heath Wines LIZARD FLAT Shiraz South Australia
Description: This deep redwine with attractive crimson hues has complex aromas of dark cherries and coffee / chocolate with a hint of spice combining very nicely. The palate is medium to full-bodied with full flavours of berry fruits and dark chocolate, supported by subtle oak and grainy but soft tannins with a nice clean finish. Founder and former racing car driver turned wine producer, Alan Heath, purchased from his retiring next door neighbour a 100 year old dairy farm in the premium wine growing region the 'Adelaide Hills' in South Australia. Paying great attention to soil type, climate, row sizes, ripping, water quality, varieties and cloning attracted the immediate attention of Penfolds who contracted the fruit from his premium vineyard for a number of years. The purchase of the Vineyard was the start of a journey that culminated with the formation of Heath Wines in 1998. Alan's days as a grower taught him some valuable lessons. Sourcing of fruit is driven by the 'best sub-region for each varietal' and the 'best vineyard for each sub-region.' As a result of this Alans philosophy is simple 'We are committed to and focus on producing handcrafted wines with fruit driven varietal flavours, structure and balance.' (12 x 75 cl) Price: £86.83

Bergsig Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Breede River Valley RSA
Description: The Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843. De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker and has obtained a BSc degrees in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, before joining the family firm in 1990. His brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards. Their father Prop Lategan is still very active in the general management and promotion of the wines from his beautiful 400 Ha farm in the foothills of Bainskloof Mountain. Bergsig Estate lies at the narrow funnel-like entrance to the Breede River Valley. The regular afternoon South-easterly breezes have a moderating effect on the summer heat and ensures cool picking temperatures throughout the day. The Bergsig Estate was the first winery outside the coastal region to earn a superior award for redwine. More specifically the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon. This encouraged Prop Lategan to plant more red varieties and today 20% of all plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Tinta Barocca. On the white side Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and now the very popular Gewurztraminer predominate. The modern cellar handles 4000 tons per harvest and boasts a separate wood maturation cellar. Charles Melton NINE POPES Barossa Valley South Australia
Description: The Barossa Valley Nine Popes is a blend of 54% Grenache, 44% Shiraz and 2% Mourvedre. It is deep coloured, with wonderful musky Grenache and just a touch of spicy, leathery Shiraz perfumes on the nose. A relatively cool vintage, with milder, wetter weather before harvest, this has resulted in a more perfumed, elegant wine than the drought year of 2003. It has a long length, with spicy blackberry perfumes on the finish. This was an excellent vintage for the Grenache in this blend and its quality shines through. Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa redwines since 1984. Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what were then considered a couple of unfashionable varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhône but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. Probably one of the only wine titles to grow out of linguistic incompetence, the origin of ‘Nine Popes’ is an interesting one! Once Charlie had settled on a Rhone blend, he decided to name the wine after the world's most famous wine from the southern Rhone, Châteauneuf du Pape. The problem was that his French skills were somewhat sketchy and he thought that Châteauneuf du Pape meant home of the ‘Nine’ popes. This wine is sealed under Stelvin closure to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £130.06
