Windowrie THE MILL Cabernet Merlot Cowra New South Wales Australia
Description: The Mill Cabernet Merlot is an excellent example of the harmony these varietals can exhibit when blended. The colour is deep berry red and has aromas of fruit, spice and American Oak. The palate displays soft integrated oak with concentrated fruit and soft lingering finish. Growing Season The Cabernet fruit in this wine is sourced from the oldest vines on the estate. The vines are hand pruned in winter to ensure a small crop load while allowing sunlight into the canopy. The vines are then trained during the growing season with a bunch thinning occurring. The Cabernet was picked ripe in early April . The Merlot portion is also sourced from old vines trained to a Scott Henry Trellis System. Restricted Irrigation led to yield of 2.5t acre. The fruit was harvested in mid March. Winemaking The Cabernet and Merlot portions are both made separately until final blending which took place in February . The final blend contained 86% Cabernet and 14% Merlot. Both the Cabernet and Merlot were fermented in small open fermenters following crushing with the rollers open. The ferment was seeded with Bordeaux red yeast and maintained at 25-30ºC. Following ferment the wine was transferred to 2, 3 and 4 year old French and American barriques. The wine was racked every two months before final blending and bottling. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £90.15

J Lohr LOS OSOS Merlot Paso Robles California
Description: The 2000 vintage was truly one of great patience! Despite early bud break, true ripening came very slow due to some unseasonably warm weather during the start of the growing season and several heat spike weeks. In 2000, it was a relatively cool final month of ripening, but fortunately there was a dry late Summer, throughout September. Merlot is the earliest of our Bordeaux varieties to ripen and reached beautiful flavour and color development on the 11th of September with harvest beginning the last Merlot was picked on the 27th at an average of 25.3 degrees brix.. The release of the 2000 Los Osos Merlot marks the fourth vintage from plantings of primarily French Merlot clones #181 and #314. Unlike ther softer, less tannic Cabernet Sauvignon, where fermentation beyond dryness can be desirable, Lohr quickly have learned that daily tasting in the last few days of alcoholic fermentation and pressing just before the tannins become Gripping is key to producing concentrated, yet supple Merlot. The 2000 vintage of Los Osos Merlot is moderately dark plum-red in color with complex red fruit aromas of dried cherries, blueberry, red currant and violet with a bouquet of coffee, chocolate, roasted nuts and toast. The 2000 vintage shows concentration with ripe, soft tannins that make it drinkable now but should develop beautifully with extended bottle ageing. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £88.53

Katnook Coonawarra Merlot South Australia
Description: Tasting Note Soft and ripe with concentrated, juicy plum and blackberry fruit spiced up by vanilla and cinnamon notes from the oak. Full-bodied and well-balanced with flavour to spare. 13.5% Wayne Stehbens and his team at Katnook are making something of a speciality of Merlot in Coonawarra. The region is already well known for its world class Cabernet, and as Bordeaux shows, where Cabernet thrives the chances are Merlot might do pretty well too. Ripe and rounded with fabulous depth of fruit and wonderfully smooth tannins this is a big, characterful wine that really shows Oz's potential for world class Merlot. A bit about Katnook Estate Although the present company was only founded in 1967, the Katnook area had been well known for grape growing since the mid-19th Century, when John Riddoch planted the first Coonawarra vines. In 1980, the arrival of winemaker Wayne Stehbens heralded a new era for Katnook when they began to bottle their own wines for the first time. Since then the company's reputation has rocketed with the wines now recognised as being among the very best in the region. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £96.67
