Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John & Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John's late grandfather came from Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family properties to the wine. The first Coleraine was made from the 1982 vintage and created an instant sensation within New Zealand for unsurpassed quality. Originally a single vineyard wine, from 1989 Coleraine has been an assemblage of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc wines produced from thirty plots within Te Mata Estate's nine Hawke's Bay vineyards. This wine has a saturated magenta colour and aromas of blackcurrants, very ripe cherries and marzipan. Perfectly ripe and floral, it shows flavours of brambly blackcurrants and dark cherry syrup with hints of rosemary. The palate is powerful and very elegant with fine grained tannins leading to a long, firm finish. (6 x 75 cl)

TeMata WOODTHORPE Merlot Cabernet Hawke'sBay NZ
Description: Woodthorpe Cabernet/Merlot has a bright crimson colour, with aromas and flavours of spice, plum and mulberry. The palate is long and fine, with well-integrated cedary oak and a sustained finish. It is a blend of 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 16% Petit Verdot. The grapes for this wine were hand-harvested between April and the May . The individual parcels of each variety from each vineyard were separately crushed, destemmed and given warm, plunged fermentations. The resulting wines remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing and malo-lactic fermentation in tank. They were run off to a mixture of new and seasoned 225-litre oak barrels, still as separate components. Following maturation, topping and racking, these individual wines were blended to create a complete wine that then received further barrel ageing before egg white fining and filtration prior to bottling. Vidal Estate Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Hawke'sBay NZ
Description: Vidal Wines, founded in 1905, is one of Hawke'sBays oldest boutique wineries, and is a producer of premium quality wines that truly reflect the region and vineyards from which they were sourced. Vidal Wines gained its name from its founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal. He was 22 years old when he arrived in NewZealand from Spain in 1888. He moved North to Hawke'sBay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. Thereafter, success lead to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then TeMata. Passing from family memebr to family member, the Vidal family made a decision to sell in the early 1970's and for a while the winery experienced some instability. This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. This Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon also has a small proportion of Malbec in the blend. Overall the wine has spicy plum and tobacco aromas which lead into a palate that shows rich Merlot and Malbec black plum and red berry-fruit characters. While young, the tannins will be firm and fine-grained but will soften over time. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £105.60

This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. The 2004 growing season got underway with some uncharacteristic late spring frosts. The cool start was followed by a warm early summer, damp January and long dry autumn. Cool evening temperatures ensured a lovely fruit lift to aromas and flavours combined with a fresh acidity. Careful vine canopy work was needed to allow a clean harvest with healthy and mature fruit. Generally, this was a typical late yielding season, with a combination of good sugar and flavour ripeness enhanced by a high natural acidity at harvest. Once harvested the grapes were pressed gently and around 60 per cent of the juice run to barrel to undergo fermentation with the balance completed in tank. Around six months on stirred yeast lees are added for a rich creamy texture and increased palate weight as well as creating a balanced complexity. Around 30 per cent of this wine was then allowed to complete full malolactic fermentation in order to create a balance of flavour and add mouthfeel to the final blend. A tropical Hawke'sBay Chardonnay with pineapple and peach aromas leading into a palate full of ripe fruit and creamy, nutty oak flavours.. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £52.65
