Description: Donna Luigia Scotti Douglas, descendant of a noble Scottish family and widow of Count Zanardi Landi, grand duke of Tuscany, bequeaths the whole estate to her daughter in 1862. The will lists the whole of the Estate with great accuracy. In her will, Donna Luigia demands that the estate should never be split up, and that is why it came down complete to the present owner, including the vineyards, while it is fascinating to notice how each parcel of land had kept its own name. In 1972 the whole of the estate was sold to the Sgorbati family, winemakers of tradition from the surrounding area. Since 1991 Enrico Sgorbati, son of Giuseppe and Fernanda, has overseen winegrowing and in 1998 he started making high-quality wines in the old manor-house, now entirely restored. The vineyards of the Torre Fornello estate cover an area of 55 hectares on the hills around Piacenza, in the commune of Ziano. Here soil and climate are particularly suitable to winegrowing, an activity that has been going on since Roman times. The vineyards are under controlled cover crop, which forces the vines to a natural competition, resulting in lower yields per hectare, but of higher quality and more resistant to moulds. While every single winemaking and stocking stage follows the guidelines regulating organic products and the result is eco-friendly, high-quality wines. The grapes for this wine come from estate vineyards in the commune of Ziano enjoying a good site and certain microclimatic advantages. Gutturnio Superiore Sinsal is a blend of two grape varieties, Barbera and Bonarda, whose limited and selected yields give prestige to the wine. Sinsal is a word from the local dialect, meaning the middleman who in the old days acted not only as intermediary in the selling and buying of agricultural commodities, but also as a go-between, arranging marriages between local families. Hence the name given to a wine which is a perfect, long-lasting marriage between two noble grape varieties destined to improve with time. In October only the best bunches of grapes are selected and hand-picked, and each grape variety is then processed individually. The grapes are de-stemmed, soft pressed and then pumped into small stainless steel tanks, where they ferment with their skins at a controlled temperature ranging between 28° and 30°C. Maceration takes from 15 to 20 days to allow for a thorough separation of juice from skins. The wines thus obtained are mixed in the right proportions and left to age for about seven months, part in stainless steel tanks and part in oak barrels, which give a noticeable flavour and a balanced body to the wine. The wine is then aged in bottle for four months before it is released. This wine is a dark garnet colour verging on violet, with a vinous aroma showing hints of plum and cherry complementing the smooth wide-spectrum aroma. This wine is softly tannic with a stewed fruit aftertaste and enjoyable finish.
