In 1990, after discovering promising potential vineyard property in the Casablanca Valley, Agustin Huneeus realized his dream of returning to Chile to found Veramonte. Veramonte's Casablanca Valley is surrounded by coastal mountain ranges creating a diversity of unique microclimates and terroirs. Its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides ideal growing and ripening conditions for Chardonnay. The valley floor provides a cool Carneros-like climate, while the terraced hillside blocks have warmer temperatures, similar to the northern Napa Valley. This 'super-premium' wine uses Carmenere as the base together with some Cabernet Sauvignon. Using premium quality fruit from the Alto de Casablanca estate, the young wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Definitely a 'terroir' wine, Primus is a limited production wine that showcases the rare Carmenère variety, a grape once prevalent in Bordeaux in the 1800's when Chile first began importing vines from France. The finished wine has superb concentration with mouthfilling flavours of blackberry and cherries mingling with the spicy oak.
