Quinta dos Roques pioneered the idea of varietal bottling in Portugal with their 1996 wines, and were probably responsible for the Touriga Nacional gold rush which followed. Despite their fame, Roques remain a small producer, with many of their bottlings not exceeding 1000 cases. With 12 different plots totalling 40 hectares this is a dynamic and exciting estate, making a sometimes bewildering array of different wines. An elegant red with ripe black fruit and vanilla notes, the palate continues the theme developing balance and persistent silky flavours. (12 x 75 cl)

Quinta das Maias Jean Tinto Dao Portugal
Description: At the eastern end of the Dao region, 700m up into the foothills of the Estrela mountains, Maias boasts 12 hectares of mostly sixty year old vines. It is a magical and remote place, which is gradually being restored by Luis Lourenco of QuintadosRoques. Jaen is the predominant black grape in the region and here it has produced a garnet coloured wine with plenty of dark forrest fruit aromas as well as hints of oak from barrel ageing. A great refelction of the terrior and cool climate Maias is renowned for this wine is showing smokiness combined with fruit purity. In the mouth the wine is powerful, with very soft tannin, while it is complex finishing in a long lingering style. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £182.68
