The Vie di Romans Chardonnay has Gianfranco Gallo’s hallmark richness, but the perfume and acidity on the wine is in stunning balance with the fruit. Gianfranco Gallo is a perfectionist. Not for him the unoaked, over-sweetened simplicity of many white wines from Friuli; he is more interested in richness, texture, length, complexity and the ability to age. For this reason, he releases his white wines 18 months after the vintage (6 x 75 cl)

Vie diRomans FLORS di UIS Isonzo
Description: Flors di Uis is an unoaked blend of 55% Malvasia Istriana, 20% Rhine Riesling and 25% Tocai Friulano. It has a perfumed, waxy style, which lends itself remarkably well to ageing. It reveals superb depth in its exotic, floral aromatics and sweetly layered ripe fruit, with notable detail that plays off the wine’s richly opulent texture. The fruit for the Flors di Uis comes from south-facing vineyards at 29-34 metres above sea level. The 12-year-old vines are planted on gravel and ferrous soils and are Guyot trained. The grapes were hand picked and the wine was aged for 8 months in stainless steel before bottling. Vie diRomans is based in the heart of Isonzo, where Gianfranco Gallo’s 30 hectares of vineyards produce about 150,000 bottles a year. The soil is stony and glacial, and soaks up whatever rainfall there is like a sponge. This cool wind causes a big difference between day and night temperatures, and enables the grapes to accumulate a great deal of flavour. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £137.39

Description: The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is straw-yellow in colour, with greenish tones, and has a perfume reminiscent of apricots, exotic fruit and yellow pepper. The palate has a wonderfully balanced varietal expression with hints of gooseberries mingling with stone fruit, all lifted by good acid on the finish. The Lorenzon family’s 160 hectares of vineyard in the Isonzo DOC zone in south-eastern Friuli are split primarily between two blocks. The I FeudidiRomansvineyard, an old apple grove with stony, well-drained soil of glacial origin, is situated in the heart of the zone, abutting those of Gianfranco Gallo at Vie diRomans. The care the family put into working their vineyards ensures excellent quality, ripe and flavourful fruit arriving at the winery. An old apple grove with stony, well-drained soil of glacial origin, it now comprises 60 hectares of vineyard and 15 of apple trees. The care the Lorenzon family put into working their vineyards ensures that excellent quality fruit, which is ripe and flavourful, arrives at the winery.
