Founded in 1977, Matanzas Creek Winery is located on the site of a retired dairy farm in Sonoma County's recently accredited American Viticultural Appellation , Bennett Valley. The Estate takes its moniker from the natural creek running through the area, which was named by Spanish settlers for the Pomo Indian deer hunts once common in the area. Predominately Merlot, this wine is also comprised of a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The Merlot fruit is sourced from the vineyard surrounding the Estate and Jackson Park, the Estate-owned mountain vineyard located 930-feet above Bennett Valley. The Bennett Valley fruit benefits from wide swings between daytime and evening temperatures resulting from a cool maritime breeze. This breeze, called the Petaluma Wine Gap is captured by the three mountains that envelop Bennett Valley – Bennett Mountain, Sonoma Mountain and Taylor Mountain. The well-draining, sandy loam soils also contribute to Bennett Valley’s model growing conditions for Merlot. Bennett Valley and Russian River Valley source the Syrah fruit for this blend, while Knights Valley is the primary source of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine begins with a powerful nose that surpassingly leads with rich Bennett Valley grown Syrah. Black cherries, boysenberry and vanilla prevail on the palette. The Merlot fruit contributes a slight hint of smoke, resulting from basalt, an ancient ocean floor rock found in Bennett Valley soil. The concentration and intensity of Bennett Valley grown Merlot provides for an exceptionally full mid-palette and, what their French Assistant Winemaker called a uniquely long Cudali, translated as a 'finish that continues well after the wine is swallowed.' Description: J. Stonestreet & Sons Vineyard & Winery began in the autumn of 1989 when Jess Jackson purchased a small vineyard and winery in the rolling hills bordering southern Alexander Valley. He named the winery in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson, and dedicated it to the task of handcrafting wines using traditional methods while showcasing modern techniques. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for powerful red and luscious white wines. Following this early success, Jess Jackson acquired the nearby Alexander Mountain Estate in 1995 and focused Stonestreet on mountain wines, particularly the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in addition to small amounts of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from older vineyards on the mountain. Retaining the intense mountain flavours and colour from mountain fruit demands special care. A pre-fermentation cold-soak extracted fruit flavours while minimising tannin extraction. Separate lots were then fermented at warm temperatures with either native or cultured yeast for a total of about three weeks total skin contact time. Ageing was done in thin-stave French oak barrels, coopered to Stonestreet's specifications. This served to further integrate tannins and fruit while maintaining a balanced structure. A regimen of quarterly racking with light aeration and egg white fining naturally clarified the wine and further developed the nuanced complexity and supple tannins. This wine is well-balanced with a particularly lush mid-palate and dark ruby-purple colour. In 'declared' Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Graham's Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Graham's to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more. Graham's have been offering Malvedos Vintage Port since 1951 and recent years to have been singled out for bottling include 1987, 1988 and 1990. Description: 35% of the grapes were cold macerated for 18 hours at temperatures lower than 5ºC. The rest, crushed and pressed immediately. Free-run and low pressure was used to produce de Reserva level, in order to secure a maximum of fruit concentration and a good acidity balance, essential for this style of fresh Sauvignon and structured with a good acidity . A work over fine lees before proceeding to the decanting. Musts highly decanted and fermented at low temperatures allow good fruit development and retention of the same 40% of the wine was kept in contact with its lees for two to three months, in order to affix its character and give greater volume to the final blend.
